The History of the Android Software Stack
Android is a software stack that includes an Operating System, middleware, and key applications designed for mobile services. Android was originally developed in 2003 by Android, Inc., a company found in Palo, Alto, California. In 2005, Google acquired Android Inc. And made it their wholly-owned subsidiary. The original team behind Android stayed with the company even after the acquisition and eventually went on to improve the initial version of the software. Acquisition of the Android signified Google’s intent on entering the mobile communications industry. Finally in November 2007, Android, running on Linux-kernel 2.6, was unveiled.
Android was released as an open source platform, which means developers are encouraged to replicate and modify it for free. Today, there are almost 500,000 apps listed in The Android Market (the online Android apps store hosted by Google) and 6 billion downloads from Android-powered phone users. Androids great success is partly thanks to individuals and teams behind Android app development services.
